The thought of standing in front of the audience to speak fills my whole body with fear. My first speech was for my high school senior presentation. I wanted to present first in order to get it over with. But I ended up presenting last because I was so nervous. When I went up front to present, i remember telling myself that it'll be over soon. I went up front and I started shivering and sweating to a point that I had to ask to be excused for a minute before my presentation.
My weakness in speeches is eye contact. I cannot look at my audience and talk at the same time because it makes me so nervous because, at that point, I am thinking, what is he/she thinking about my speech? Does he/she think I am a bad speaker? Does he/she like my topic?
You tend to think of all those questions when you make eye contact with your audience. You wonder whether the audience is thinking positive or negative things about you. I try to work on making eye contact my inviting all my friends and family members together to practice my speeches to them. I also try to practice to people I don't really know in order to get a different feedback. Because families and friends tend to always give you positive feedbacks. They won't always tell you the negative feedbacks. So I practice to people I don't always communicate with, such as a friend of a friend or classmates I'm not really friends with.
My other weakness during my speeches is that I stutter a lot when I am nervous before my speech. I am currently working on that for my TED Talk. I am working on it by trying to figure out what I need to do to reduce my anxiety be I make my speeches. I noticed that I just need to believe in myself, relax and not worry too much about what my audience will think of my speech.
I might have weaknesses but I also have strengths as well. My strength is developing confidence during my speech. I am always nervous before making my speech and in the beginning of my speech, but I do build up confidence as I continue speaking. There is just one more thing I need to work on, which is being confident from the beginning of my speech to the end.
Although making speeches to a crowd isn't something I enjoy doing, I am willing to enjoy it and be better at it for future purposes.

How Much More Do You Want? Haven't You Had Enough?
The Circle will never give up if nobody destroys it. It consumes humanity and its privacy just like how the shark consumed the seahorses and the octopus. The Circle is never satisfied, and it wants more of everything. "Intentionally or not, the octopus presented a challenge to its fate. The shark ripped off an arm, then seemed to get a mouthful of the octopus's head... Then, like a machine going about its work, the shark circled and stabbed until he had devoured the thousand babies, and the seaweed, and the coral, and the anemones" (481). After Victor fed the shark six large tuna, each ten pounds or more, it was still not satisfied. The shark was fed all day, but it was still ravenous. The shark, also known as the "transparent shark", symbolizes the circle. The scene featuring the Mariana Trench creatures symbolizes everything that goes on in the circle. The transparent shark consuming the defenseless creatures in the tank until they all disappeared, is how the circle will consume humanity until we have nothing left. Every Creature in that tank were devoured by a beast that turned them into ashes. If not dismantled, the circle will do the same to humankind and take over our lives and leave us with nothing.
Ty of all people finally realized the negative path the the circle has taken, and he was willing to end it. He was one of the "wise men" who created the company in the first place. He helped to build the circle but he did not intend for it to turn out the way it did. After building the circle, his intention was to destroy it and to slow it down. But in order to do that he needed Mae's help.
The shark will be the circle. It is transparent in its own way, and transparency is what makes the circle succeed in its business. The seahorses and the octopus will represent humanity since they were the preys. What the preys went through is similar to what we go through in reality. The preys tried to hide and protect themselves from the shark but unfortunately they were caught and torn into pieces. We try to keep our secrets to ourselves and our privacy undisturbed, but companies like the circle invade invade into our lives and make everything personal very common.
"We are not meant to know everything, Mae. Did you every think that perhaps our minds are delicately calibrated between the known and the unknown? That our souls need the mysteries of night and the clarity of day? Young people are creating ever-present daylight, and I think it'll burn us all alive. There will be no time to reflect, to sleep to cool" (434). Mercer's point is that, everyone deserves to know what is going on. For example, when information about Annie's family was made public, she completely had a breakdown.

SECRETS ARE LIES, SHARING IS CARING, PRIVACY IS THEFT
I am not very surprised with these mantras at all. Everything you do becomes circulated rapidly from one user to the next. Secrets are lies, sharing is caring and privacy is theft sounds very forceful. These mantras sounds like a rule or a new federal law written down in the U.S code. It's like a person is being forced to put her business or private life out there.
In today's society, everything is public. People now post pictures and videos of themselves on social media for the public to see. And for those who do not like putting their business out there, such as celebrities, their business is put out there by paparazzi for gossip and profit. It's paparazzi's job to do what they do for money, so they will willingly do it.
I was a little worried for Mae when she said she would transparent in all that she does. I was worried for her because she was really disliked it when Francis recorded her. So how would she be transparent in all that she does if she is uncomfortable with one camera on her not to talk of many cameras?. I think Mae did not really mean it when she said, "she'll be transparent in all that she does". I feel like she only said that because that's what the people she works with would want to hear.
Everything we do in today's society is not private anymore because nowadays if you want to work for your dream job, in order to get hired, you will have to do a background check. This was the same thing Mae had to do in order to work for the Circle. The show "Quantico" is about the young FBI recruits who were being trained to be special agents. These recruits were chosen because they considered to be the best. But each of them possesses secrets and they all had to partner up to find out what their partner secrets were. I used the show as an example to support the reason why I said that everything we do in today's society is not private.
No one want a completely shut down life because it'll make a person bored, miserable and depressed. But no one wants their imperfections out there either because that could make a person miserable as well from judgements being thrown at them. I feel like the mantras are used mainly in jobs for the safety of workers and non workers. Because someone may be a danger to the people around him or her and will keep it a secret. So I somewhat support the mantras only because I care about the safety of people. At the same time, in some situations, the mantras are unnecessary. Some secrets are meant to be kept as secrets.

Data + Privacy = Data Privacy
Privacy will definitely strike back... If you want to picture the Circle, just imagine a company that reveals all your personal life and online identity into one account. This is what the company stands for: "all that happens must be known", "privacy is theft", "secrets are lies", and "to heal we must know, and to know we must share".
Mae Holland had no problems with the philosophy of the company because this job was her dream job and she is finally working in it. But Mae Holland struggles to fit into the transparency that is found in the Circle because she has personal experiences and problems that she would prefer not to be shared. The Circle is a social company built on the philosophy of transparency. Anybody that tries to keep their secrets to themselves does not belong there. Based on one of "the wise men", Bailey, in order for the company to grow and be great, all secrets must be revealed. And this is done through data. One of Bailey's best arguments about keeping secrets, which helps to fulfill the goal of this philosophy is: "A circle is the strongest shape in the universe. Nothing can beat it, nothing can improve upon it. And that's what we want to be: perfect. So any information that eludes us, anything that's not accessible, prevents us from being perfect" (287).
The relationship between data and privacy is that when data is used to study the personal life of an individual, there will be no privacy, Secrets will all be revealed, and as a worker of the company, you will have to accept the criticism you will receive from people. You have to be valiant and not worry about what people will think of you.
Another of the three wise men, Ty, fears that the company he helped to build is taking the wrong path. Everything that is going on in the company was not really what he expected. So he plans on destroying it. In the Circle, he says to Mae, "here, though, there are no oppressors. No one's forcing you to do this. You willingly tie yourself to these leashes. And you willingly become utterly socially autistic. You no longer pick up on basic human communication cues. You're at a table with three humans, all of whom you know and are trying to talk to you, and you're staring at a screen searching for strangers in Dubai." (260).
Mae is a single child who was once raised by her parents. But life for Mae took another turn, so her parents had to depend on the Circle's healthcare plan. But this dependence will lead to Mae's parents being forced to have cameras in every part of their house. This will increase her parent's distrust of the Circle and Mae.
The Circle punishes any politician that tries to interfere with its ability to access information and use evidence to validate accusations. This is how the relationship between the U.S Government and the Circle began to be out of control. This is the main reason why Ty wanted to destroy it. Privacy will definitely strike back.

The Circle
Being a Penn Stater has been a life changing experience because I grew up in the city and things were done differently there. I have enjoyed and benefited from being a Penn Stater through the relationship I had with my fellow classmates. My experiences as a freshman at Penn State is a lot similar to Mae's experiences in the Circle because we are both new to a vast, and beautiful campus that has everything anybody would need. Before I became a Penn Stater, I never really thought I'd get accepted into the school in the first place. I did not think that my grades and my SAT score were high enough to get into the school, so I was very shocked and excited when I received a letter of my acceptance into the school. As Mae walked through the hall, she wonders how she even got the new and exciting job.
While Mae was still a college student, she was unable to decide what major she wanted to have a degree in. She switched from one major to the other. I am going through the same experience here. At first I was a Criminology major but now I am undecided because I do not know what major I want to focus on. When I arrived to Penn State, I was given a tour by the upper class students in order for me to know the locations of my classes on campus. Mae was also given a tour by Renata so that she'll be more familiar with offices on campus.
Being a newbie in a big environment is very exciting and overwhelming at the same time. It's exciting because you are given the opportunity to learn more about the environment you desperately want to be in. It is overwhelming because you have to adjust to the way of living in that environment. You also have to be familiar with every part of the environment because you don't want to be late for class or for work. As a newcomer, it's a lot to take in. As a newcomer in an environment, we are all connected and encouraged to become closer and go to a lot of event, try new things and be involved.
The values that each community share is that, "secrets are lies, sharing is caring, and privacy is theft". Mae's experiences in college is so similar to mine but there's only a slight difference. This difference is the fact that Mae worked a 9-5 job at a utility in her hometown. During my freshman year I am working hard to accomplish my goal of a high GPA. As a newcomer in the Circle, Mae learned quickly and worked steadily throughout the week to earn an average of 97.
In the Circle, Mae's job consists of arranging conversations, restocking pantries, making payments, and ranking human beings. The mantras that is shared by both community is that we have to be independent and be responsible adults. Also, we are expected to think fast and act slow in other to succeed in what we are aiming for. Mae is working for a purpose and I am currently in college for a purpose as well, so I believe we are both aiming for something.

Careers vs Jobs : Following your Passion
Is following your passion more important than money?
Everybody loves money, and there's no doubt about that. Money is never good or bad. Money allows for dreams to come true and it takes others away. Money is the greatest asset that can build happiness and it can destroy happiness. Money is now linked to the pursuit of happiness. Many people argue that Money = Happiness. Sometimes when people choose money, they get blinded by it. This leads them to a path that isn't right for them, this path is the money path. Money can buy us all the things we want in the world, but it can't buy us everlasting happiness. It can give us temporary happiness but it cannot buy us time. You should not feel like you are wasting your life away.
Unfortunately it is very difficult for this generation to find a job that they are passionate about rather than a job they hate. This may cause the result of finding a career because doing a job we hate should not be something we will do forever. So it is better to follow your passion than money. Waking up every morning to do a job you don't even care about is a waste of your precious life and time. You only have one life, so you might as well enjoy it and not waste it doing a job you hate just for the money.
There are times that you will feel like work is a draining experience. There are highs and lows so therefore if you do a job you don't like, when you start feeling drained, you'll feel like giving up or quitting your job. But if you love your job to death and you are feeling drained, you will come up with something to cover that up. When you value money so much, work ends up feeling like it is forced upon you, you find yourself being miserable endlessly. These people value money more than their health. The money lovers have the mentality of working so hard so that in the future they will retire and enjoy themselves. But what is the point of enjoying yourself in the later years when you spent most of your time being miserable?. It is better to enjoy your life while you are still young and strong than to waste all that opportunity just to enjoy life in your later years.
No matter how much money you make, nothing will help you overcome the feeling of doing something you hate. But if you do a job you are passionate about, you can easily turn that into a career. Also, no obstacle will ever get in your way of achieving success. Work doesn't have to be something you hate doing, let it be something that will make you happy. My advice to people is that, always chase your dreams and never run them down...
